People hear "bull terrier" and picture a stubborn goofball. Let me tell you what this breed can actually do. Penelope is a certified therapy dog (not a service dog, those are different). Getting there took about a year of training and certification through the state and the AKC. It is not quick, cheap, or easy. And a bull terrier did it.
She worked with seniors in assisted living and kids in reading programs. Watching her become the calmest, gentlest thing in a room full of people who needed her is something I will never forget. The same brain that makes these dogs "too much" for some people is what makes them brilliant when you channel it. That is the lesson in twelve years with her: bull terriers are ridiculously smart, and with proper guidance they rise to whatever you ask. The energy and stubbornness people complain about are just intelligence with nowhere to go. If you are putting in the work with your bully, keep going. What is on the other side is one of the most capable dogs you will ever have.
